PEPPERSACKS RESTAURANT

Address: Viru 2/Vanaturu 6

The name of this restaurant comes from the name of one of it's owners. In 16th century house belonged to Hans Pepersack, whose family name simply means pepper sack. In that time noblemen used to call the burgers mockingly as follows: the grocers were "pepper sacks" and the craftsmen were towels. Evert, the forefather of Hans Pepersack, had taken the mock name for his family name: there is no much sense to be ashamed of the profession that sometimes enabled to earn up to 2000% profit. The contemporary restaurant occurs from older cafee "Gnoom". In twenties this mini-cafe with six tables used to be very popular among elder women. Transformation of "Gnoom" into giant was held at 1979. The city makes use of opportunities offered by the Olympic games in Moscow: the old city center is reconditioned with reference to the Sailing Regatta in Tallinn. The buildings in the courtyard were pulled down and the one more spacious was built. During the adaptation works the large hallway was restored and a number of details and constructions found during the works were exhibited. The installation for the facilities of the restaurant and cafe were designed by basing ideas on old Baroque and Biedermeier furniture.
